Before You Choose Anyone, Choose to Know Yourself

Most people spend far more time preparing for a wedding than they do preparing for a marriage. They spend even less time preparing themselves — sitting with the harder questions of who they actually are, what they carry, and what they are still healing from.

Start Right is not a detour from the relationship conversation. It is the prerequisite for it. Before you can choose well, you have to know what you are choosing from — a place of wholeness, or a place of need.

Before You Choose Anyone, Choose to Know Yourself

The questions most people avoid

Honest self-examination asks things like: What are the patterns I keep repeating in my relationships, and where did they begin? What do I believe about my own worth, and where did that belief come from? Am I seeking a partner to complete something in me that only I — and God — can actually heal?

These are not comfortable questions. That is precisely why most people skip them. But a foundation you have never examined is a foundation you cannot trust, no matter how good the person standing on it with you turns out to be.

Identity before intimacy

You were created for more than just surviving love — you were created to thrive in it. But thriving does not begin with finding the right person. It begins with becoming a person who is whole enough to build something real with someone else.

This is the work of Start Right: identity, wounds, values, and purpose, examined honestly and without rushing. It is not glamorous work. It is foundational work. And it is where every healthy marriage actually begins — long before the wedding day.
